How long should you leave a face mask on?
As long as the pack says, which is usually 10 to 20 minutes. Our peel-off jelly masks take 15 to 20 minutes to set. Leaving a mask on longer rarely adds anything, and with some kinds it can leave skin dry or irritated. Only masks sold as overnight masks are meant to stay on while you sleep.

Typical times, by type
These are the usual ranges you'll see on packs. Yours may differ, and the pack wins.
| Mask | Typical time | When to stop |
|---|---|---|
| Jelly | 15 to 20 minutes | Set and no longer tacky |
| Sheet | 15 to 20 minutes | Before it starts to dry |
| Clay | 10 to 15 minutes | Before it dries hard and cracks |
| Film peel-off | 15 to 20 minutes | Fully dry to the touch |
| Cream or gel | 10 to 20 minutes | By the pack |
| Hydrogel | 20 to 30 minutes | By the pack |
| Exfoliating acid or enzyme | Often 5 to 10 minutes | At the time on the pack, or sooner if it stings |
| Overnight | While you sleep | Rinse off in the morning |
Masks with exfoliating acids or retinoids are the ones where the time matters most, so stick to it closely with those.
Why longer isn't better
It's tempting to think an extra half hour means extra benefit. In practice, a few things work against that:
- Water goes both ways. A mask helps while it's holding moisture against your skin. Once it starts drying out, that help runs out, and as a clay mask dries many people find their skin feels tight.
- Ingredients get longer contact than they were sold for. A mask with retinol or an exfoliating acid has a time on the pack for a reason. More time can mean more irritation. DermNet notes that redness, peeling and dryness are the classic side effects of retinoids.
- You don't get a better peel. A jelly mask that has sat too long can start to dry at the edges, because water can leave an alginate gel. That's not good for the clean lift you're after.
How to tell a jelly mask is ready
It starts as a paste and firms up into something cool and rubbery. It's ready when it no longer feels tacky and you can lift an edge at your jaw without leaving jelly behind. Set a timer on your phone for 15 minutes, check it, and give it up to 5 more if it needs them. Every Omorfia formula, from Hyaluronic Acid to Tea Tree, sets in the same 15 to 20 minutes.
Peeling too early is the more common problem: it tears and leaves bits behind. If that keeps happening, these common mistakes might explain why. A layer that's too thin is usually the cause.
Is 30 minutes too long for a face mask?
For most masks, yes, unless the pack says otherwise. A clay mask will have dried hard well before then, a sheet mask will have started to dry out, and a peel-off mask will have been ready for 10 minutes or more. The exceptions are masks sold to stay on longer, such as some hydrogels, and overnight masks.
What if you fall asleep in one?
It happens, because lying still under a cool mask is relaxing. If you wake up with a jelly or clay mask on, take it off gently, rinse with lukewarm water, and put on a plain moisturiser. Look your skin over. If it's stinging, itchy or red, leave out other products until it settles, and read what to do if a mask irritates your skin.
If you want something you really can sleep in, that's a different product. See sleeping masks vs peel-off masks.
Does the time change for the neck, or for sensitive skin?
The setting time stays the same wherever you put it. If your skin reacts easily, start with the shorter end of the range and fewer masks a week rather than leaving it on longer to "see what happens". Patch test first in any case.
How long, and how often
The two go together. Follow the pack on both, and give your skin a rest between masks. For a jelly mask, one to three times a week suits most people: how often to use a jelly mask has a rhythm for each.
Questions
Can you leave a face mask on overnight?
Only if it's sold as an overnight or sleeping mask. A jelly, clay, sheet or film mask should come off at the time on the pack.
What happens if you leave a clay mask on too long?
It dries hard and can crack, and many people find it leaves their skin feeling tight. Rinse it off before it reaches that point.
Can I peel a jelly mask off early?
You can, but it's likely to tear and leave bits behind if it's still tacky. Give it the full 15 minutes before checking.
How long do you leave a sheet mask on?
Usually 15 to 20 minutes, or whatever the pack says. Take it off before it starts to dry, then pat in what's left.
How long do you leave a peel-off mask on?
Until it has fully set or dried, usually 15 to 20 minutes. A jelly mask is ready when it no longer feels tacky and the edge at your jaw lifts cleanly.
Is 30 minutes too long for a face mask?
For most clay, sheet and peel-off masks, yes, unless the pack says otherwise. Longer rarely adds anything, and it can leave skin dry or irritated.
