Sleeping mask vs peel-off mask

By Omorfia. Last updated 7 November 2026. 3 min read.

A sleeping mask is a rich gel or cream you leave on overnight, and it works much like a heavy moisturiser. A peel-off jelly mask is a 15 to 20 minute ritual that you take off before bed. If you want low effort and dry skin is your main concern, a sleeping mask makes sense. If you want the cool feel and the time out, go for the peel-off.

What a sleeping mask does

Most of them combine two things: humectants, which attract and hold water in the top layer of skin, and ingredients that form a layer on top to slow water loss. Slowing water loss is a well understood effect. You can get something similar from a thick night cream, which is worth knowing before you pay extra for the word "mask". We couldn't find good trials comparing sleeping masks with an ordinary moisturiser, so be wary of bold claims.

The weak spots are simple. Rich products can feel heavy on oily skin, and a long stay on your face gives any ingredient that disagrees with you plenty of time to show it. Patch test those as well.

What a jelly mask does differently

It doesn't try to work while you sleep. Its appeal is in the short window: the cool layer setting on your face, the time lying still, the peel. You follow it with your usual moisturiser, so a good night cream still does the overnight job.

Who might prefer which

Can you use both on the same night?

You can, if the sleeping mask is a plain hydrating one: peel the jelly mask, rinse, then apply the sleeping mask in place of your moisturiser. Check its label first. If it contains a retinoid or an exfoliating acid such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, keep it to a different day from an Omorfia mask.

What about the term "overnight facial"?

Words like this are marketing rather than a defined product. A proper salon facial involves hands, time and often a peel-off mask of the jelly kind at the end. A sleeping mask is a skincare product. Both have their place, but one isn't a stand-in for the other. If you like the idea of a facial at home, this is how we'd do a spa night.

Questions

Do you rinse off a sleeping mask in the morning?

Most are meant to be rinsed or washed off in the morning, as part of your usual cleanse. Check the pack, as a few are designed to be left to absorb.

Is a sleeping mask the same as a night cream?

They're closely related. Both are leave-on products for overnight, and sleeping masks are often gel-textured or richer. A good night cream can do much the same job.

Can you sleep in a jelly mask?

No. A jelly mask should come off once it has set, after 15 to 20 minutes. If you fall asleep in one, take it off gently and rinse.
