Seven peel-off mask mistakes, and how to fix them
Most peel-off jelly masks that go wrong were spread too thin, mixed with warm water, or peeled before they had set. Here are the seven mistakes we hear about most, and the fix for each one next time.

1. It set in the bowl
You mixed too slowly or used warm water. Use cool water, stir for up to a minute until smooth, and start spreading it straight away.
2. It tore when you peeled it
The layer was too thin. Aim for about 3 to 5 mm, thick enough that you can't see your skin through it. A thin layer sets into a film rather than a jelly, and a film tears.
3. It's lumpy
Add the powder to the water rather than the other way round: 2 tablespoons of cool water in the bowl, then 3 level tablespoons of powder. Stir until it looks like thick yoghurt, adding a splash more water if it's stiff.
Too runny to stay put? That's too much water. Stir in a little more powder straight away, and use level tablespoons next time.
4. It's stuck in your eyebrows or hairline
The jelly doesn't stick to skin but it grips hair. Tie your hair back and smooth it on around your brows, not over them. If you have stubble or a beard, peel-off masks and facial hair explains how to mask around it.
5. You peeled it too early
If it's still tacky, it isn't set. Give it the full 15 to 20 minutes. Set a timer on your phone and lie back. It's ready when it feels cool and rubbery all over and the edge at your jaw lifts without leaving jelly behind. More on timing in how long to leave a face mask on.
6. You peeled from the forehead down
Start at the jaw, where the edge is easiest to lift, and peel upward. It comes away more cleanly in one piece.
7. You mixed too much
Mix one mask at a time: 3 level tablespoons of powder covers your face. Leftover jelly sets in the bowl and can't be saved, as reusing a jelly mask explains.
Quick fixes at a glance
| What happened | Most likely cause | Next time |
|---|---|---|
| Set in the bowl | Warm water, or slow mixing | Cool water, and spread it straight away |
| Tore into pieces | Too thin, or peeled too early | 3 to 5 mm thick, and the full 15 to 20 minutes |
| Lumpy | Water poured onto the powder | Powder into the water, then stir for about a minute |
| Too runny | Too much water | Level tablespoons: 3 of powder to 2 of water |
| Pulled at your brows | Jelly on hair | Stop at the brow line, with your hair tied back |
| Bits left behind | Peeled too soon, or from the top | Wait until it's set, then peel from the jaw up |
If it won't peel at all
If the whole layer is still sticky after 20 minutes, the mix was probably too wet or spread too thin to set. Rinse it off with lukewarm water, pat your face dry, and try again another day with level tablespoons and a thicker layer. Don't scrub at it.
Two more things: put the used mask in the bin, not down the drain, and patch test before your first mask. The full routine, and what to know before you start, is in how to use a jelly mask. Every Omorfia formula mixes and sets the same way, so these fixes work whichever jar you have.
Questions
Why won't my peel-off mask come off in one piece?
Usually because the layer was too thin or it hadn't fully set. Spread it about 3 to 5 mm thick, wait the full 15 to 20 minutes, and peel slowly from the jaw upward.
Why did my jelly mask set in the bowl?
Warm water or slow mixing. Use cool water, stir for up to a minute until it's smooth, and spread it on straight away.
What if my jelly mask is too runny?
There's too much water in it. Stir in a little more powder straight away, and next time use level tablespoons: 3 of powder to 2 of cool water.
Can I save a jelly mask that set too early?
No. Once it has set, it can't be softened again. Put it in the bin and mix a fresh one with cool water.
