Can you reuse a jelly mask, or save the leftovers?

No to both. A jelly mask is single use: once mixed, it sets within minutes and can't be softened again, and a peeled mask has been sitting on your skin. Mix one mask at a time, put the used mask in the bin rather than down the drain, and keep the dry powder in the jar with the lid tight.

Why you can't keep the mixed jelly

Mixing sets off the gelling, which is the whole point of the product. It starts thickening soon after you add the water, and once it's a rubbery gel you can't turn it back into something spreadable. You can't refrigerate a batch for next week or top it up with more water. It'll just be lumpy, and it won't spread evenly or peel well.

So the answer is to mix only what you need. For one face, that's 3 level tablespoons of powder into 2 tablespoons of cool water. If you've got leftovers in the bowl, they're done. Let them set, lift them out, and bin them.

Why not reuse a peeled mask?

It looks intact, so it's a fair question. A peeled mask has lost its fresh water to your skin and the air, it's picked up skin cells and oil from your face, and it's no longer going to fit your contours. There's nothing to gain, and putting it back on an hour later or a day later isn't hygienic.

Bin, not drain

Our instructions say this for a good reason. Set jelly doesn't dissolve like soap. It stays in rubbery pieces, which can catch in a sink trap or shower drain. Fold the used mask up, put it in the rubbish, then rinse your face. Scrape the bowl into the bin before you wash it, too. We wouldn't put it in the compost either, because it contains more than seaweed gel.

Looking after the powder

Dry powder is what keeps. Once opened, use your jar within 12 months, as the 12M symbol on the jar shows. A few habits help:

Sharing a jar

That's fine, as long as each person mixes their own batch in a clean bowl. Scoop with a clean dry spoon, and don't dip a spatula that has touched someone's face back into anything. At a couple of masks a week each, a jar shared between two lasts about 2 weeks. Make sure everyone has done their own patch test.

The spatula

The silicone spatula that comes with every jar is reusable. Wash it in warm, soapy water after each mask and leave it to dry completely before you put it away, so no water gets near the powder. Any jelly stuck on it will come off more easily if you clean it straight away.

Questions

How long does jelly mask powder last?

Use it within 12 months of opening, as the 12M symbol on the jar shows. Keep the lid tight and the powder dry.

Can I mix a jelly mask ahead of time?

No. It starts to thicken soon after mixing, so have everything ready and spread it on straight away.

Can I put a used jelly mask in the compost?

We'd put it in the rubbish. It's more than seaweed gel, and we can't say how the other ingredients behave in a home compost.
