Do peel-off masks remove blackheads?
Not in any lasting way. A peel-off mask may lift a little surface oil and debris, so your nose can look cleaner for a while, but we couldn't find good research showing it clears blackheads, and they come back. Our jelly masks aren't made for blackheads and we don't claim they help with them.

What a blackhead is
A blackhead is an open comedo: a plug of oil and skin cells sitting in a hair follicle, open at the surface. According to DermNet, it's dark because of surface pigment (melanin), not dirt. That one fact explains a lot. You can't wash or peel away something that isn't dirt on top of your skin, and the plug itself sits down inside the follicle.
Why pulling doesn't solve it
A mask only reaches the surface. Even if it does catch the tip of a plug, the follicle goes on making oil and shedding cells, so the same pore can fill again.
Then there are the specks people photograph on a peeled film mask. It's hard to know by eye what they are. A speck on a mask isn't proof of a cleared pore, and it's no measure of what's left behind.
Can pulling make things worse?
It can if you're rough. DermNet lists rupture of the follicle by injury, such as squeezing pimples, as a cause of trouble, and it advises against abrasive washing for the same reason. A sticky film torn off in a hurry isn't the same as squeezing, but gentle is the sensible rule for skin that's prone to blackheads.
What's more likely to help
DermNet's advice for comedones comes down to a few plain habits, plus proper products if those aren't enough:
- Wash twice a day with a mild cleanser, and skip the scrubs.
- Choose oil-free cosmetics.
- Leave them alone rather than squeezing.
- Talk to a pharmacist or your GP about products made for comedones if they bother you. These are used daily and can take weeks to months to show a change, which tells you why a mask you wear for a quarter of an hour isn't the answer.
So what is a jelly mask good for here?
Mostly how it feels. It's cool, it comes off cleanly, and your skin can feel fresh afterwards, without anything heavy left behind. If you're oily and shiny, our page on oily skin goes through what to expect. For a fresh feel on oily skin, Tea Tree is the formula we'd suggest, though not as a fix for blackheads. If shine is the main thing you're after, a clay mask is built for that job: see clay vs peel-off.
One caution: if you're already using a product for blackheads, there's a good chance it contains a retinoid, salicylic acid or another exfoliating acid. Don't use an Omorfia mask on the same day as those.
Questions
Why do blackheads keep coming back?
Because the follicle keeps making oil and shedding skin cells. Removing the visible tip doesn't change that, which is why products for comedones are used every day over weeks and months rather than once.
Are blackheads dirt?
No. DermNet explains that they're dark because of surface pigment (melanin), not dirt, so scrubbing harder won't shift them and can irritate your skin.
Is it OK to squeeze blackheads?
It's best not to. Squeezing can injure the follicle. If they bother you, ask a pharmacist or your GP about a product made for them.
This is general information, not medical advice. If you're worried about your skin, see your GP or a skin specialist.
